A Watercolour Journey in Croatia

With David Smith

David R. Smith began his artistic journey studying Chinese Brush Painting in the United States and China.  A decade later, he was introduced to Western style watercolor painting and was amazed at how enjoyable and forgiving it was compared to working on rice paper.  Ever since, he has been hooked on watercolor painting, and has become a popular artist and instructor nationally and internationally, as well as a sought-after juror.   With over 25 years of experience as a public school teacher, he is skilled at breaking down complex concepts and skills into easily learned chunks and now enjoys helping workshop participants find success with watercolor.  As much as he loves to paint, he has found sharing his watercolor passion through instruction even more gratifying and he is most rewarded when he hears a frequent comment: “This is one of the best workshops I’ve ever taken.”

About David and the tour

Join me for an experience of a lifetime as the Watercolor Journey takes us to the beautiful island of Korcula.  I can’t wait to share my passion for watercolor with you in this amazing place. During our time together, I will share my direct painting process, useful for in-studio and outdoor painting. It is the most valuable approach to painting I know and hope it will open new doors of discovery and creativity for you.

Regardless of your level of experience, whether the subject matter is a narrow street scene, a quaint village, or boats on the beach, you’re almost guaranteed to leave with a handsome work of art, and the skills, concepts, and confidence to take your paintings to a higher level.

Participants will be provided frequent demonstrations and guided practice.  To paint outdoors or en plein air, you will learn a systematic approach that will increase one’s success and enjoyment. I will demonstrate a wide variety of techniques, including "wet-on-wet," “spattering", and "spraying" – methods and approaches that will keep your paintings fresh with exciting blends and textures, and keep you inspired and eager to explore your new watercolor capabilities long into the future.

Here is an example itinerary of how you can expect your 10 days to go (this schedule is always subject to change) :

DAY 1

Transfers depart at 10:00am from Cavtat main bus station on the start date of the tour.  Our transfer will drive along the coast where we will stop for lunch at Vila Koruna in Ston, which is about half way. We then make our way to Orebic where we catch a car ferry to the Island of Korcula. Here you will be able to settle into your home away from home at Hotel Liburna in Korčula town.

DAY 2-9
A buffet breakfast will be served daily, before travelling to different parts of the Island. On the tour you will see vistas rich in vineyards, quiet coves, small beaches, flourishing olive tress and quaint architecture. This part of Croatia is unique in its beauty, encouraging one to take pleasure in painting and sketching.

Your painting tour includes scenic areas such as ZrnovoPupnatSmokvica, Orebic and Peljesac Peninsula (Mainland), Racisce, Korcula and Lumbarda, as picked by your instructor. Our day will begin at 8am with breakfast and then the day is set in motion by your instructor… each instructor will vary slightly but mornings and afternoons will be for painting, with a box lunch on location, in between.

At the end of the day we will return to the our hotel. You will have some time to yourself before the evening meal at 7pm and are encouraged after dinner to spend time exploring the area or enjoying wine with your fellow artists, relaxing before your next day of painting.

During this trip you will also get a glimpse into the life of locals by enjoying a tour of the old town of korcula, a few tastings of local delicacies and wine.

We always include a day off for our painters to enjoy also abit of downtime.
